Irrigation

  • Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. Gentle Rain provides free written estimates on all new irrigation systems to all clients in our service area. We will meet with you in person to discuss your specific irrigation needs and perform an on-site analysis to evaluate the size and layout of your property. It is critical for us to view your property in order to provide an accurate and honest estimate.

  • How much does a sprinkler system cost?

It is difficult to give you a price for a sprinkler system without meeting with you personally and reviewing your property's watering needs. There are a number of variables that affect cost including the size of your property, the type of landscaping, water source (city or pump and well), and obstacles in the property including pools, sheds, fences, etc. At Gentle Rain, we try to customize the system to maximize the benefits and coverage. We make suggestions, and then let you decide upon a sprinkler system that best meets your needs and budget.

  • How long does it take to install a sprinkler system?

It depends upon several factors including the size of the system, the number of zones, the water source, the soil conditions and whether there are a lot of trees and shrubs in your yard. Typically, a small system can be installed in as little as a day while some larger systems can take a week or more. Most systems are completed in 2-3 days.

  • Is the installation of the sprinkler system disruptive to my yard and landscape?

We take great care during the installation process to make sure there is as little disruption to your property as possible. We use a vibratory plow to install the lines. Pipe and wires are "pulled" underground through a small slit in the earth to minimize damage to the lawn. We also carefully hand dig in flower beds and around utility markings. After a couple of weeks from the installation date, the only visible signs of your new sprinkler system should be a greener lawn and healthier plants.

  • What is the warranty of the sprinkler system?

    Our warranties include:

    • One year guarantee on parts and labor
    • Two year guarantee on parts (rotors, spray heads, valves and controllers)
    • Five year guarantee on sprinkler heads against rotary failure
    • Five year guarantee on piping and fittings underground
    • Free winterization and spring start up the first year
  • Do you provide service after the warranty period?

Absolutely. Our service department is fully staffed to include full-time office support as well as experienced service technicians. Our service department handles everything from starting your system in the spring to winterizing it in the fall, and everything in between. Providing superior, long-term service for our customers is the cornerstone of Gentle Rain and always will be.

  • What products do you use?

Gentle Rain uses professional-grade equipment from the largest, most respected manufacturers in the industry including Hunter, Rainbird, Toro and Netafim. We only use pipe that is certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The fact of the matter is, it doesn't matter how good your sprinklers, valves, controllers and pipe are if the irrigation system is not designed and installed properly.

  • What is required to maintain my sprinkler system?

Basic maintenance is required to ensure the effective operation of your system. The most important services are the fall winterization and the spring start-up. In the fall, we shut down the system and blow out the lines to eliminate the risk of freezing pipes. In the spring, we turn the system back on, evaluate each zone, adjust heads and reset the controller.

  • Will a sprinkler system use more water than I am currently using?

An automatic sprinkler system typically uses less water than watering by hand or manual, hose-based sprinklers. Our systems are designed, installed and programmed to deliver even, precise watering, minimizing water loss due to run-off and evaporation.

  • What happens if it rains, will the system continue to operate?

We recommend installing a rain sensor on all of our sprinkler systems. The sensor is set to automatically shut off the system when the amount of rain reaches a certain level. Once an appropriate level of dryness is reached, the system will automatically restart.

  • What is the best time of day to water?

The best time to water is in the early morning, with the watering completed before the sun comes up. At this time the water pressure is the highest, and evaporation and wind are the lowest. Try not to water in the evening, since having moisture on your grass and plants overnight can promote the growth of fungus.

  • What is the difference between rotor heads and spray heads?

Rotor heads are typically used for large turf areas. These sprinklers contain a gear-driven mechanism that rotates the head in a circular pattern. Spray heads are generally used in smaller flower beds and smaller grass areas. These sprinklers do not contain moving parts and emit a fan-type spray in a fixed pattern.

  • What is drip irrigation?

Drip irrigation is a highly-efficient, alternative method to watering planting beds. Drip irrigation lines are installed below the mulch and out of sight. Water is applied directly to the plant root zones via drip emitters placed at proper spacing intervals. Since there is no water spray, water loss from evaporation is virtually non-existent. We can help you decide whether this a good option for your planting beds.

  • Do you install pumps and wells?

Yes. Through our professional association with Burton Well Drilling and Johnson Well and Pump Service, we can arrange for the installation of your pump and well to coincide with the installation of your irrigation system.

  • Do I need a pump and well to operate the sprinkler system?

No. We can design the system to utilize either city or well water.

  • What is a backflow preventer, and why do I need one?

This device prevents water from the irrigation system from "flowing backwards" into the drinking water supply. A backflow preventer is required for sprinkler systems that operate on city water. Our technicians are trained and certified to install these devices on irrigation systems.

  • Do backflow preventers require additional service?

Although the regulations vary by locality, backflow testing is required periodically. Our technicians are certified to test all backflow preventers.

  • What is a deduct meter?

This meter is installed after the residential water meter and is used to measure the flow of water going to your irrigation system that does not reach the sanitary sewer system. Since this water will not reach the sanitary sewer, you will not be billed for sewer usage from water used through the deduct meter.

Choosing an Irrigation Contractor

The success of your irrigation system depends largely on the contractor you choose to install it. A contractor's expertise and specialized skills are crucial in determining your system's efficiency and long-term reliability. In fact, how your irrigation system is designed and installed will make the difference between a system that is reliable and keeps your lawn green and healthy, and one that is troublesome, wastes water and leaves your lawn looking brown and unhealthy. Above all, you should choose a contractor you can trust and with whom you feel comfortable.

To ensure that you hire a reputable irrigation contractor capable of designing, installing and maintaining a high-quality system, ask the following questions:

  • Does the contractor have a minimum of 10 years of experience?

Only by hiring a contractor with a large base of experience can you be confident that your irrigation system will be designed and installed properly. An inexperienced contractor may not fully understand the parameters of the job and may not be available for future service and warranty issues.

Gentle Rain is Tidewater's oldest and most experienced irrigation contractor. We have been in business for over forty years designing, installing and servicing residential and commercial irrigation systems.

  • Does the contractor have a Class A business license?

Class A contractors must meet the strictest standards required by the Commonwealth of Virginia. This license is earned by contractors that can perform projects of any size. It provides peace of mind that the job is not beyond the contractor's capability.

Gentle Rain is a Class A contractor. (License #: 2701-033975A)

  • Does the contractor have the appropriate insurance?

Your contractor should carry adequate Liability and Workman's Compensation insurance in the unlikely event of an accident. You should request proof of insurance demonstrating that your contractor is fully insured for all operations on your property.

Gentle Rain has a comprehensive insurance program including General Liability, Worker's Compensation on every employee, and Auto Insurance on every vehicle.

  • Does the contractor offer a warranty period for the materials and workmanship?

At a minimum, your contractor should provide a written, one-year warranty on parts and labor.

    Gentle Rain's warranties include:

    • One year guarantee on parts and labor
    • Two year guarantee on parts (rotors, spray heads, valves and controllers)
    • Five year guarantee on sprinkler heads against rotary failure
    • Five year guarantee on piping and fittings underground
    • Free winterization and spring start up the first year
  • Can the contractor provide a list of references?

Client references are often the best indicators of the contractor's work. At your request, your contractor should provide you with the names and telephone numbers of references to call. These property owners can attest to their satisfaction with the contractor's work.

Gentle Rain will proudly provide you with references upon request.

  • Can the contractor provide after-sales service and maintenance?

Lawn sprinkler systems are put through rigorous wear and tear, often in use for hundreds of hours a year. Your contractor should be properly staffed and equipped to provide timely, reliable service such as winterizations, spring start-ups, and repair and/or replacement of worn out components.

Gentle Rain maintains a fully staffed and equipped service department with experienced technicians solely devoted to providing outstanding service for your irrigation system.

  • Does the system provide "head-to-head" coverage?

One of the fundamentals of irrigation design is that each head hit the one to the left and right of it, and any other heads within its throw in order to provide even water coverage. Proper spacing of the sprinkler heads is paramount for a lush, green lawn.

Gentle Rain does not cut corners on irrigation design, so you can be confident that your sprinkler heads will be properly spaced.

  • How many rotors and spray heads per zone?

Your available water pressure determines how many sprinkler heads can properly function on one zone. Too many sprinkler heads on a zone prevent the heads from popping up completely and spraying effectively.

Gentle Rain always designs irrigation systems to match the available water pressure. Your system will have the correct number of sprinkler heads per zone with the appropriate nozzle sizes.

  • Are spray heads and rotors used on the same zone?

Different types of sprinkler heads put out different amounts of water and should never be installed on the same irrigation zone. Mixing sprinklers with different application rates causes one area to be over watered in order to sufficiently water another.

Gentle Rain never mixes two different types of sprinklers on the same zone.

  • Is a rain sensor included in the contractor's estimate?

Rain sensors are designed to shut off the irrigation system when a specific amount of rainfall has occurred. These devices conserve water, save you money on utility bills, and prevent unnecessary wear on your sprinkler system.

Gentle Rain includes the installation of a rain sensor in all of our proposals.

  • Is your contractor certified to install and test backflow preventers?

Backflow preventers are required on all city water irrigation systems to protect the drinking water from contaminants. Certification is required by law to install and test these devices.

Gentle Rain is certified by the Virginia Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation to install and test backflow preventers.

  • Does the contractor use waterproof wire connections and valve boxes?

Some of the most common electrical problems in an irrigation system are caused by faulty wiring. Special watertight connections are necessary to guard against short circuits and prevent corrosion. Valves should always be enclosed in protective boxes that allow for future inspection and maintenance.

Gentle Rain always uses heavy-duty, grease filled splice kits to safeguard the underground electrical connections. We always install valves in protective boxes that provide easy access.

  • Will the contractor provide an as-built drawing?

It is important to document the layout of your sprinkler system to designate the location of the sprinklers, pipe, valves and control wire. An as-built drawing is an invaluable tool for future maintenance and repairs.

Gentle Rain always creates an as-built drawing of your irrigation system after the installation is complete.

  • Is the contractor a member of the Irrigation Association (IA) and Virginia Irrigation Association (VIA)?

Both organizations seek to advance professionalism in the irrigation industry and environmental conservation through intelligent water management. Membership in these organizations indicates a commitment to furthering the industry and keeping up with technological changes and standards.

Gentle Rain is an active participant in the both the IA and VIA. Co-owner Bill French is the current President of the VIA.

Hardscapes

  • What is hardscaping?

Hardscaping refers to the non-living, structural elements of your landscape, including pavers, stone and wood.

  • What kind of hardscapes do you design and install?

We have the experience and equipment to handle just about any hardscaping project including:

    • Patios
    • Walkways
    • Driveways
    • Pool Decks
    • Retaining Walls
    • Outdoor Kitchens and Fire Pits.
  • Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. Gentle Rain provides free written estimates on all new hardscaping projects to all clients in our service area.

  • Do you work with a landscape designer?

Yes. Gentle Rain enjoys an exclusive relationship with Meg French Landscape Design. Meg is a certified landscape designer with a degree in horticulture. She has over 20 years of experience serving the Hampton Roads community. Depending on the scope of the project and your specific needs, we can work with you to determine whether it makes sense to utilize Meg's services.

  • Is there a fee for the design?

On designs that are limited in scope, there is often no fee required. However, there is a fee required for all full scope designs and master plans. Fees normally range from $500 to $1,500.

  • Can you complete my project in phases?

Absolutely. A phased approach can make sense for budgetary or logistical reasons. We can work with you to create a vision for your property and then help you manage each aspect of the implementation so that the end result is a beautiful, cohesive landscape.

  • What are "interlocking" pavers?

Interlocking pavers is a somewhat misleading term and does not refer to the pavers themselves. It is the system that combines the base, bedding sand, pavers, joint sand and edge restraint to create a unified, flexible pavement.

Learn why pavers make an exceptional paving surface.

  • Why is a proper base so important?

Sometimes the most important aspect of a project is what you don't see. We cannot overstate the importance of a firm base. The strength and integrity of your paver or retaining wall installation is determined by the quality of the base. Appropriate base material, thickness and compaction are essential to ensure your installation will stand the test of time. If you are evaluating contractors, make sure you ask them about the base.

  • How soon after installation can I use my driveway or patio?

Unlike concrete, which can take 3-5 days to cure, pavers can handle traffic immediately after installation.

  • How do I choose the right pavers for my project?

That will depend on many factors including personal tastes, use of the area and budget. We can guide you through the decision process by making recommendations and showing you samples of actual paving stones.

  • Will weeds grow between my pavers?

Weeds and grass result from seeds or spores blowing into and lodging in the joint sand. We use joint sands that inhibit weed growth. Weeds can be further minimized by sealing the pavers. If they do appear, a spot vegetation killer (such as Round-Up can be used and will not damage the pavers.

  • Do I need to seal my pavers?

Sealing your pavers is not required, but it does offer several benefits. A sealer helps maintain the color of the pavers, repels stains such as grease or oil from cars, and binds the sand particles between the joints, making it more difficult for weeds to germinate. Should you decide to seal your pavers, it is recommended that the sealer be reapplied every few years.

  • What is the whitish deposit I see on some pavers?

it's a natural occurrence called efflorescence, common in concrete and masonry products. It is produced by the ingredients and materials used to install pavers. Efflorescence will not damage or adversely affect your pavers and typically weathers away over time. If you have aesthetic concerns, there are cleaning products you can use to remove it.

  • How do I remove stains from my pavers?

There are a number of different cleaning solutions available on the market. Whether it is an oil stain, grease and grime, rust, moss and algae, or rubber marks, there is a product suitable for all stains.

  • What can I do if something damages my pavers?

Pavers are extremely easy and cost-efficient to repair since individual units can be removed and replaced. The damaged pavers are pried out with two flat head screwdrivers and replaced with new ones. It's that simple.

  • What should I expect during the construction process?

It would be dishonest to tell you that there are no disruptions. The construction process is noisy. Our crews will be running saws and compaction equipment. Nearly all of our work produces dirt and dust. We advise our customers to keep doors and windows closed and to remove outdoor furniture from the construction area. It may also be necessary to temporarily disable parts of the irrigation system. Please be patient; the end result will be more than worth these short-term disruptions.

Water Features

  • Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. Gentle Rain provides free written estimates on all water features to all clients in our service area. We will meet with you in person to understand your vision and make recommendations on the size, type and location of the water feature. We then let you decide on a design that will maximize your enjoyment and conform to your budget.

  • How much does a water feature cost?

The cost depends on the size and scope of the pond, stream and waterfall. Location is also a factor. If the water feature is in an awkward location with difficult access, the installation time can increase. On average, the cost is similar to that of a hot tub or outdoor spa.

  • How long does it take to install a water feature?

Depending on the scope of the project, it can take anywhere from 1 day to a week to complete. When we come out to your property to provide your complimentary estimate, we can also gauge the amount of time it will take to complete the installation.

  • What is the warranty of the water feature?

    Our warranties include:

    • Ten year guarantee on the liner
    • One year guarantee on the pump
  • Do ponds require a lot of maintenance?

A properly designed and installed pond should require little regular maintenance. A couple of times a week you will need to add some powdered bacteria to keep the water clear. Depending on the amount of leaves and debris that make their way into your pond, you should regularly empty the debris net and clean the filter pads in the skimmer.

  • I want a waterfall, but I don't want to maintain a pond. Do you have any suggestions?

How about a pondless waterfall? You can enjoy the beauty and sound of a waterfall without worrying about maintenance of a pond. The water from the fall spills into a receptacle filled with gravel and re-circulates back up into the waterfall. The pondless waterfall can also be shut off when not in use since there is no ecosystem being maintained.

  • Does it need to be cleaned out?

Although our water features are low maintenance, a yearly spring clean out is highly recommended. A spring clean out involves removing the fish and plants, draining the pond, high pressure washing the rocks and cleaning out the filter media. Then we put it all back together again and you have yourself a sparkling new pond again.

  • How much water does it use?

Due to evaporation and some splashing, water will periodically need to be added into the pond. We recommend installing an automatic water-fill valve that will keep the water at a given level.

  • How much electricity does a water feature use?

It depends on the size of the pump being used and the current cost of electricity in the area. The cost will usually start at about $20.00 a month based on a 3,000 gallon per hour pump.

  • What preparation is required?

We will need a separate electrical 110V GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected circuit within 20 feet of the pond pump location. If desired, the electrical work can be performed by Gentle Rain's electrician and directly billed to the homeowner.

  • Can I shut off my pump when I leave for the weekend?

If you have a pond, we recommend leaving your pump on in order for the pond"s natural ecosystem to maintain its balance.

  • Do ponds breed mosquitoes?

No. Mosquitoes only breed in stagnant water. Our ponds use a pump to constantly re-circulate the water.

  • Does the pond have a filter system?

Our ponds include both a biological and a mechanical filter. A biological filter provides surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and remove excess nutrients from the water. A mechanical filter will not only pre-filter the water and house the pump; it will also skim debris from the water"s surface to prevent the accumulation of organic materials on the pond floor.

  • Will I get algae in my pond?

Some algae are normal in a pond, but should become less prevalent once the ecosystem becomes balanced. Excessive algae are generally the result of a pond that has too many nutrients from fish waste and other decaying organic material, insufficient oxygen or too much sunlight.

  • Do I need to have plants in my pond?

Aquatic plants are part of the pond"s balanced ecosystem and act as a natural filtration system. They help keep the water naturally clean and clear by taking up nutrients in the water that would otherwise by taken up by algae. Plants also serve an aesthetic purpose. They soften the rocks, making the pond look more natural.

  • Do I need to have fish in my pond?

While not required, fish play an important role in balancing the pond"s natural ecosystem by feeding on algae. Most homeowners discover that fish require very little care and add to the enjoyment of their pond.

  • How deep does the pond need to be?

We recommend that the depth of the pond be at least two feet. If the pond is too shallow, the water will heat up, encouraging excessive algae growth.

Landscape Lighting

  • Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. Gentle Rain provides free written estimates on all new landscape lighting systems to all clients in our service area. We will meet with you in person to discuss your specific lighting needs and perform an on-site analysis to evaluate the size and layout of your property. It is critical for us to view your property in order to provide an accurate an honest estimate.

  • How much does a lighting system cost?

It depends on several factors including the size of your property, the complexity of the landscape, the number and type of fixtures, and the placement of the fixtures.

  • How long does it take to install a lighting system?

Most systems take between one and three days to install, but every system is different. Time of installation is site dependent.

  • Is the installation of the lighting system disruptive to my yard and landscape?

There is little or no disruption to your property. If trenching is required across the lawn, a small incision is made about 6-8 inches deep, the wire is placed inside, and the grass folded over top of it. In planting beds, the mulch is raked back and a similar small incision is made to bury the wire.

  • What is the warranty on the lighting system?

    Our warranties include:

    • One year guarantee on parts and labor
    • Three year guarantee on light fixtures
    • Lifetime warranty on transformers
  • Do you provide service after the warranty period?

Absolutely. Gentle Rain is fully staffed and equipped to service your landscape lighting system. Please contact our office or visit our Service page for additional information.

  • Why should I go with a low-voltage system instead of a high-voltage one?

In addition to being safer and more energy efficient, low-voltage lighting systems provide much cleaner and sharper lighting that is impossible to achieve with high-voltage systems. low-voltage systems provide light to accentuate a given area subtly while high-voltage systems provide too much light at the source, drawing attention to the fixture and away from the area you are trying to light.

  • I've seen lighting kits in hardware stores that are cheaper? Why should I consider a professionally installed lighting system?

A professionally designed and installed lighting system uses components and techniques that are far superior to prepackaged kits. These kits cannot produce nearly the same quality of light or provide the same durability that a professional system can. The transformers are typically under-powered, and the fixtures are made of cheap plastic with too many low-wattage bulbs. Our fixtures are made of high-quality copper, brass and aluminum.

  • What about solar lights?

While solar-powered lights are certainly energy efficient and easy to install (i.e. no wires), there are several key disadvantages. The lighting is very dim compared to low-voltage lighting and the fixtures produce a bluish tint, creating the appearance of a poorly lit landing strip. Also, areas that are naturally shaded adversely affect the fixtures' recharging capabilities.

  • How is the lighting system controlled?

There is a timer located inside the transformer that controls the lighting system. It is set to your desired on/off times and can be manually overridden with a flip of a switch.

  • How does this affect my electricity bill?

low-voltage lighting is extremely energy efficient. While the operating expense will vary based on the number of fixtures, 12-volt lamps consume approximately 1/3 the electricity that 120-volt lamps use. Most systems can be operated for less than fifty cents a day.

  • What maintenance is required?

Very little. The professional grade lighting fixtures we use last for years and there is a lifetime guarantee on the transformer. Bulbs do burn out and need replacement, and the lenses need to be cleaned periodically. Also, as your landscape changes, you may need to adjust or move fixtures.

  • What if I want to extend my landscape and want to add more fixtures later?

When properly designed and installed, low-voltage lighting systems are expandable so they can be adapted to meet your needs today and tomorrow.

Drainage

  • Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. Gentle Rain provides free written estimates on all drainage solutions. We will meet with you in person to discuss your specific drainage problem and perform an on-site analysis to evaluate the size and scope of the problem. It is critical for us to view your property in order to provide an accurate an honest estimate.

  • How much does a drainage system cost?

It is difficult to give you a price for a drainage system without personally inspecting your property. There are a number of variables that affect cost including the type of drainage solution, the length of the drainage lines and soil conditions.

  • How long does it take to install a drainage system?

It depends on the size and scope of the project. Typically, a small drainage system can be installed in as little as a day while some larger systems can take several days to complete.

  • Is the installation disruptive to my property?

We take great care during the installation process to make sure there is as little disruption to your lawn and landscape as possible. We carefully hand dig all drains and are meticulous about the way we backfill our trenches.

  • What is downspout drainage?

One of the most serious problems with landscape drainage is downspouts that discharge the roof water (often hundreds of gallons of water during a heavy rainfall) right next to the foundation. To rectify the problem, the downspouts are connected to buried drain lines that carry roof water away from the house.

  • What is a French drain?

A French drain is a type of subsurface drain that utilizes a buried perforated pipe installed in a gravel bed with a filter sock surrounding the pipe. Water from the surrounding soil enters the gravel bed, flows into the drain pipe and utilizes gravity to flow towards the discharge point.

  • What is a catch basin?

A catch basin is a type of surface drain used to remove large amounts of water from low areas in the yard. The catch basin collects the water and in conjunction with a non-perforated drain pipe system diverts the water away from the problem area.

  • What is a channel drain?

A channel drain is a type of linear surface drain typically used for hardscape surfaces including driveways, pool decks, etc. Runoff water collected in the drain is discharged to bottom or end outlets which are connected to drain pipe.

  • What is a Pop-Up Drainage Emitter?

A Pop-Up Drainage Emitter allows water to be diverted and released to water-safe areas away from structures, erosion-prone landscapes and poor drainage areas. The pop-up emitter is opened by the hydrostatic pressure of water flowing through the drain pipe. As water flow diminishes, the emitter closes again.

  • What is a swale?

A swale is a uniform valley created to drain water from one area to another. By reshaping the surface of your yard, we can create natural run-off, and shed the water away from your home and property. This can usually be done with minimal disruption of the current lawn and landscaping.
